Fogo Island
Found at May 1, 1640, the second island to be discovered by Portuguese navigators was originally called of "São Filipe" but later became identified with more property, by Fogo. All of this island is a primitive and still active volcano, with the last eruption occurring in 1995.
The top reaches 2829 meters and covers an area of 477 Km2 inviting to a 3-4 hours escalation to immense and gorgeous crater of Chã Caldeiras where a community lives with very specific physical characteristics. Descended from a French nickname Montrond have light skin and eyes and curly blond hair. São Filipe, the island's capital, is facing the sea overlooking the neighboring island of Brava. Its paved streets, its numerous gardens with trees and flowers and its old colonial type houses, the "sobrados", mark the essential features of the island emanating attraction and charm. |

Situated in the north island mountains, the "Mosteiros" area is distinguished by its microclimates, fertile land and volcanic lavas. About 10,000 inhabitants are distributed in this area that has the county seat in the Village "Vila da Igreja".
With paved roads, providing easy access to points the must visit points we can expect a quiet and pleasant stay. The volcano, is impressive both for its size as for its beauty is undoubtedly the biggest tourist attraction of the island. Other points of tourist interest are the "Monte Velha" and its forest, and the "Sao Jorge" salinas, not forgeting the black sand beaches with beautiful coral and seaweed, here we can swim at the surface and at greater depths. |
Currently, despite the low rainfall dry and arid areas of the south oppose those in the northern half of the island, with rainforest and amazing fertility. The Fogo has about 40,000 inhabitants that are primarily dedicated to agriculture, positioning it as the 3rd island in agricultural production.
